After introducing the topic from an historical point of view, the authors summarize a mathematical study of the topological evolution of the Spanish gauge railway network in the 1956-2006 period that has recently been published in the journal Mathematics and Computers in Simulation. They show that the network has progressively lost flexibility over this time.
